Threads of Heritage - A Short Cultural Fashion Film by Pfeka African
Harare, Zimbabwe - Pfeka African proudly presents Threads of Heritage, a short cultural
fashion film that explores the intersections of heritage, craftsmanship, and contemporary African identity. Inspired by the architectural and cultural legacy of Great Zimbabwe, the film centers around Pfeka African’s Masvingo print fabric - a textile design that draws directly from this historical reference point. Through this fabric, Threads of Heritage reflects on how cultural memory is preserved, interpreted, and reimagined in the present.
At the heart of the film is Pfeka African’s commitment to storytelling through textile, design, and cultural expression. The featured showstopper garment emerges as a culmination of shared knowledge, craftsmanship, and creative collaboration echoing the collective spirit through which Great Zimbabwe itself was built. “This project is a reflection of how we continue to build our heritage through collaboration, skill, and imagination,” says Pfeka African founder Eglet Mtengwa-Nyabvure. “It was important for us to honour where we come from while also expressing who we are becoming.”
The film was developed through a multidisciplinary collaboration bringing together creatives across fashion, film, performance, and sound. The Masvingo print is interpreted into garment design by Ruby’s Touch Designs, led by Ruby Cheryl Zinyawu, translating textile into form through craftsmanship and contemporary design.
The project is shaped in close collaboration with cultural storyteller, performer, and creative director Rutendo Denise Mutsamwira, whose narrative voice and presence guide the film’s thematic journey.
Directed by Tatenda Kanengoni, the film weaves together movement, sound, and visual
storytelling. Original music was produced by Fungai Nengare (The Studio.Inc), with musical contributions from Tinashe Makore and Norest Kawanzaruwa.
The film also features dance by Dance Mom, alongside performances by models Melissa
Marimo and Marshall Mutsamwira.
Together, the collaborators create a layered narrative that brings heritage into dialogue with contemporary creative practice positioning culture not as something static, but as something continuously shaped through relationship, skill, and time.
Threads of Heritage is both a reflection and an invitation: to consider how we carry forward what we inherit, and how we actively participate in shaping its future.
Threads of Heritage was developed with support from the British Council Catalyst Grant.
